Beneath a peaceful appearance, the painting deals with barbed wire. Kees van Willigen had spent several years in captivity behind barbed wire.
The starting point was the observation of rusted pieces of wire left in the countryside after fences were built. The rust and the metallic surfaces are rendered with precision.
