The Bois de Païolive, in the Ardèche, is a site of eroded rocks in which faces and animals can be recognised. Kees van Willigen knew the place well and was possibly inspired by it.
The painting shows a resting deer, composed as if carved from the rock, accompanied by three delicate pink mouths.
