Lankouas is one of the roughly 15,000 islands of the Indonesian archipelago, nicknamed “the Emerald Necklace” because, seen from the air, the islands resemble emeralds strung in a necklace. Lankouas is one of the smallest.
In this watercolour, green, a recurring colour in the work of Kees van Willigen, dominates. The drawing is precise: the lighthouse windows, the red details of the roof, the sky. The work belongs to his visual documentation of Indonesia.
