This self-portrait is one of about fifteen known self-portraits by Kees van Willigen. The artist shows himself with a red nose and wide-open eyes, the face treated in flat areas of colour.

The work dates from a period of pictorial research, close to Cubism, during which the artist was questioning his painting.
